This is the first week of our Academic Technology Scholar Course. Online teaching ideas and approaches, the Canvas System, and resources available for instructors to design courses really opened a new world for me. I have gained so much knowledge and insights in my role as an academic technology scholar. To my understanding, academic technology scholars play an intermediary role in the process of online course design. Most of us have teaching experience as Teaching Assistants, which allows us to better understand difficulties instructors come across in course design and teaching. After being students for the most part of our lives so far, no one has a better understanding of our frustration in courses. We can bridge gaps between the students and faculties and bring together the ideas and approaches that are most suitable to them. One week of learning is definitely not enough to give out excellent advice on course design, if there is any. But the idea of “enduring understanding” stood out and resonated with me. When online courses are designed, too much focus is given to the content itself but not enough attention to content delivery. Instructors emphasize precise, comprehensive knowledge so presentations are well prepared but not attractive enough to keep students engaged, especially in online courses. Good course design is critical to good teaching and learning experience. I am a strong believer in active learning. We need to encourage students to actively study through reflections, group discussions, media platforms like Panapto, VoiceThread, etc. Let students keep engaged throughout courses, feel fulfilled once they accomplish progressive tasks, and have an enduring understanding of subject matter.Image of Begin Mug
